This partnership aims to redefine how Earth Observation (EO) data is processed and exploited. By combining high-speed, secure optical communication networks with data centres in orbit, the collaboration will enable near-instantaneous processing and distribution of EO data insights to users worldwide.

The integration of optical ground stations ensures seamless, high-capacity data transfer between satellites and Earth, eliminating traditional bottlenecks in EO data handling. The initiative is expected to unlock new opportunities in climate monitoring, disaster response, and environmental research by accelerating data availability and supporting real-time decision-making.

The MOU marks a significant step toward a future where EO data is leveraged with unprecedented speed and efficiency, benefiting industries, governments, and scientific communities alike.

CCO of Archangel Lightworks, Paul Davey, said: “We are delighted to collaborate with Lumen Orbit as this partnership represents a paradigm shift for Earth Observation. Advanced optical communication systems will enable us to fully realise the potential of space-based data centres."

Lumen Orbit said: “Through this partnership, we are excited to push the boundaries of space communications in order to increase data rates and lower the latency that we can offer our customers.”

ABOUT ARCHANGEL LIGHTWORKS

Archangel Lightworks builds deployable communication systems to connect networks in space with networks on the ground. Today’s data infrastructure is insecure, insufficient, and vulnerable. Better connecting non-terrestrial and terrestrial networks offers resilience, capacity, and capability; however, high-volume, secure links between space and ground are needed. Archangel Lightworks uses wireless laser communications technologies to enable and improve global connectivity. The TERRA-M is a miniature Optical Ground Station (OGS) designed for autonomous, multi-mission capability. The TERRA-M brings deployable, resilient connectivity to wherever it is needed, providing flexible data infrastructure to support solutions to some of Earth’s most critical problems from economic inclusion to climate change. The TERRA-M is the most convenient way for cloud providers, network operators and governments to immediately deploy secure, high-volume connectivity to and from space.

ABOUT LUMEN ORBIT

Lumen Orbit is pioneering the deployment of data centers in space, overcoming terrestrial constraints on power and scalability, with initial deployments providing data center services to other satellites and specialised terrestrial applications. Backed by Y Combinator and Nvidia’s inception program, Lumen Orbit will launch its first demonstration satellite in 2025, featuring the most powerful GPUs ever deployed in space.
